have a rapidly rotating laser in the base shining on the wall in patterns that create a digital mesh of the wall behind it using sonic vibrations.
just need to make a circle with it.
or draw a pattern on the wall as it emits sound and records where studs are.
once device has pattern it displays it with laser in the body, once it is saved it can be applied anywhere to allow you to put it in any location and have it broadcast where the studs are in a level regardless of where and when it is on the wall.
